Red Velvet Pancakes: Hello breakfast heaven in Bali

COCONUTS HOT SPOT —Their red velvet pancakes might just be the most Instagrammed food in Bali at the moment.

When something looks that good in both the professionally photographed official pictures AND on countless amateur #foodporn pics, we just had to check out the Fat Turtle specialty ourselves (and how great is that name?).

The place itself is not that small by Seminyak standards, but it is indeed rather difficult to find, since there’s not great signage. For easy reference, the maker of red velvet pancakes and other delights is located right next to Deus ex Machina. You will know you’ve found the right place when you see the cute turtle murals on the white exposed-brick walls. The whole industrial look combined with some vintage charm creates a cozy space for any time of day.

The legendary red velvet pancake held up to all its photogenic glory. The fluffy moist pancake and smooth cream cheese mousse contrasts beautifully with the chocolate soil and honeycomb crunch. The green tea churros delicately capture the mellow Japanese matcha flavors and the salted dolce de leche dip makes it addictive.

Proprietor Natasya Tjandra had her priorities straight, ensuring consistency in delivering the perfect plate every single time by keeping her menu short and sweet.

But sweet is not the only taste on the menu. If you prefer to kickstart your morning with something savory, their pulled pork eggs benedict is hard to beat. Perfectly cooked egg yolks balanced out the punch of richly spiced pulled pork. That said, my personal favorite would be the corn fritters that combines the traditional Indonesian use of kefir lime leaves and western influenced avocado hollandaise. Now that’s a flavorful fusion!

As a caffeine junkie, my morning demands the perfect cup of coffee to round up breakfast and The Fat Turtle delivers. They specializes in local single origins—Aceh Gayo was served during our visit—and we know we’ll be coming back for more.

Needless to say, all that effort to get out of bed this morning was totally worth it.
