Presenting picture perfect plating and foodgasmic bites in Lovina, Bali

COCONUTS HOT SPOT — Loads of people —if not everyone planning a trip through Bali—have heard of Lovina, but not many actually make it all the way to the northern destination. The four to five hour drive from the airport does make a trip up there daunting. Is it really worth it to go all the way there to see the famed dolphins? And more importantly in our book, what about the food scene?

I arrived in Lovina around 2 pm, tired and hungry after missing my lunch on the long drive from Denpasar. Unimpressed with the rows of nearly empty restaurants along the main street, I did some Googling and found Buda Bakery. The glowing reviews online looked almost too good to be true, but I decided there would be no harm in checking the place out.

Despite leading you through smaller housing compounds and jalan tikus, the GPS directions on Google Maps are spot on.

While the decor doesn’t look like anything special, with a nice view, but nothing breathtaking, it’s the standout food at Buda Bakery that’s worth writing home about.

You need only to look at the pictures to see that the dishes here are of a different league. You expect such presentations from a fine dining restaurant, but not here in the middle of suburban nowhere in Lovina. And don’t think it’s all look and no taste.

The watermelon and feta salad was so refreshing under the warm Lovina sun. The pork patty burger was perfectly cooked and juicy. The Thai green curry hit the perfect balance of spices. The succulent prawns and handmade pasta was heavenly.

Portions are generous, so you might feel full at the end of your meal. But be sure to save some space for their lemon cheesecake – or any other desserts they have on their menu. Past customers have been quoted as saying that the desserts there are “life-changing,” and indeed they are.

So next time you find yourself in a “should we or shouldn’t we visit Lovina” discussion, you know it’s not just about the dolphins.
