COCONUTS HOT SPOT — Ubud’s culinary scene keeps evolving with more and more foreigners of different nationalities deciding to stay in this little jungle town and set up shop. This involves a number of restaurants serving authentic dishes from their homelands. In Ubud, we’ve had Italians, Thais, Japanese, and now Koreans are finally represented by Babiya.
The tiny restaurant is located at the nook of curvy Jl. Raya Pengosekan and serves authentic Korean home cooked dishes such as the famous Bibimbap ricebowl, the Korean sushi-like rolls called Kimbap, assortments of noodles, and even Korean bento sets. The Korean couple behind the restaurant helpfully put a detailed description of each dish on the menu complete with pictures of the dishes on their wall to assist customers who might have missed the Korean invasion wave that made said dishes popular worldwide.
The couple is even helpful enough to give you a helping hand in mixing the Bibimbap properly—and proper here means thoroughly and vigorously mixed so that the sweet and spicy sauce coats the rice and veggies completely. Drool.
Their spicy ramen is perfect on the chilly Ubud evenings we’re having nowadays. But they really are spicy, so you might want to order a lassi to go with it—while lassi is definitely not Korean, it is by far the most effective drink on the menu to soothe that burning sensation on your tongue.
Portions are relatively small for the price, but each tasty dish is prepared from fresh ingredients immediately after you order—they have an open kitchen concept so you can observe how they prepare your meal. And most importantly, they also serve soju, the Korean smooth and clean tasting alcoholic beverage.
