COCONUTS HOT SPOT — When eating out in Bali of course you want to try “eating where the locals eat” and Kuta gets constantly ragged on for being “too touristy”.
Well, here’s one place where you can eat like local right smack-dab in the middle of tourist-filled Kuta/Legian.
The unpretentious name speaks for itself: Sate Babi Bawah Pohon (pork satay under the tree). It’s actually under one of the tents set up under a big tree in the parking lot of the public sport Gelora Tri Sakti facilities.
It’s quite easy to find—just look for the sign that says Warung Sate Bawah Pohon Legian, or simply follow your nose to the heavenly scent of barbecued meat and there you will find it.
For a mere Rp 20,000 you will get a portion of 10 satay sticks complete with steamed ketupat rice-cake cubes. There will be a pinch of salt with green chillies served on the side. You might find this strange, as satay is usually served with peanut sauce or sweet soy sauce.
But trust us here: grab one of the skewers, use the succulent barbecued meat on it to crush the chilli on top of the salt, then tap it a bit on the edge of your plate to get rid of the extra salt if necessary before you grab a bite.
The combination of the sweet and spicy barbecue marinade together with that kick of saltiness and heat from the chilli-salt is simply mind blowing. And yes, it’s so addictive that it’s hard not to order a second serving. Go ahead, no judgement here and it won’t exactly put a dent in your wallet!
