HOT SPOT: Next level street food, terang bulan like you’ve never seen it before

COCONUTS HOT SPOT — We’ve been priding ourselves for being all over the hottest healthy, organic, vegetarian, vegan, and earth-friendly spots in Bali. But sometimes, even with all these health choices abound, you just need some good ol’ comfort food.

That’s where Djambow sweet martabak comes in, or as the locals call it, kue terang bulan (full moon cake).

This is not to be mistaken for the Chinese mooncake—this decadent artery clogging goodness is the darling of Indonesian street food dessert lovers.

The traditional sweet martabak starts with a fluffy base, made mainly out of egg, flour, sugar, and milk. Smothered with butter—preferably the fragrant Dutch Wijsman butter—drenched with sweetened condensed milk, and toppings piled on high, such as chocolate sprinkles, crushed peanuts, sesame seeds, or cheese and banana (don’t knock it until you try it!).

toppings galore!

Besides just the traditional pancake-like base, they offer red velvet and their signature avocado or luwak coffee base. Yep—you heard that right. They’ve boldly glamorized this street dessert with the addition of the world’s most expensive coffee!

As for toppings, you can have your pick from oreo cream cheese, nutella, green tea, kitkat, toblerone, banana, and choco sprinkles, cheese, or any crazy combination you can fathom with these ingredients.

Sweet martabak is traditionally enjoyed with friends because you have to order a full pan—and calories are always better shared. We love how Djambow makes personal-sized portions available. But it might not really solve the calories issue though—cause you’ll definitely be tempted to order more than one just to try the wacky combos. Go ahead, we won’t judge!
