Eating out in Sanur: 10 family-friendly places with great food and atmosphere

Sanur is a great family-friendly town with a relaxed vibe, and thankfully, now, a ton of fabulous places to eat! From traditional Indonesian and Balinese meals, to world-class Italian and healthy clean-eating restaurants, there is something to eat for everyone! Here are Bali Kids Guide’s ten favorite restaurants in Sanur:

1. Maya’s Coffee & Smoothie Bar

Maya’s is a laidback cafe on the road to Sindhu Beach in Sanur. They are best known for their smoothies and excellent coffee, but are also great for breakfast and light lunches and dinners. Kids are totally welcome and well taken care of with a menu of pastas, sandwiches, pancakes, waffles, eggs any way, and fabulous milkshake concoctions!

2. Sanur Beach Grove

After opening in 2015, Sanur Beach Grove went from an empty plot of land to one of the most family-friendly hangouts on the island. This grassy space with picnic tables and blankets offers a variety of food stalls to choose from. Kids can run and play on the grass or cross the footpath to the beach, where you can still keep an eye on them.

Most stalls don’t open until later in the afternoon when it gets cooler and people come to hangout, though some offer food from lunchtime onwards. Choose from Texas-style barbeque, nasi campur, satay, Mexican food, coffee, and sweet treats like Jub-Jub and Cloud Cakes.

3. Sand Beach & Club Restaurant

Sand is, as its name suggests, right on the beach. There are inside tables and a bar, but the best ones really are the tables where the kiddos can dig and build in the sand right next to you. We’re not sure if we’d call Sand a beach club, but it is a great place to hangout with the family as it has a good kid’s menu, big tables, showers, and changing rooms.

In the evening, the barbecue gets fired up and you can dine on fresh fish and other seafood with the luxury of the cooling Sanur breeze. Pastas and salads are also great options and for picky little eaters the chefs are happy to adjust meals to their tastes.

4. Beach Cafe

Beach Cafe is just a few strides down the path from Sand Beach Club and has a very similar vibe. Its comfy, low bench seats are great for hanging out with friends or family while the kids play in the sand. One thing that is really nice about Beach Cafe is the big, clean open kitchen where you can see everything being prepared.

The menu consists of a variety of pastas, salads, and sandwiches, as well as local faves like nasi and mie goreng. There is also a brick oven for pizzas and a gelato cart for an after lunch or dinner treat.

5. Zula

For those looking for clean eating goodness, Zula is the spot! Part of the ‘Down to Earth’ chain, Zula offers organic vegan, vegetarian, gluten free, and raw options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. This may not sound so child-friendly, but there are some fabulous kids options that even a certain very suspicious-of-healthy-food kid devours.

Fresh juices, delicious baked goods, burritos, pita sandwiches, and other goodies are just the ticket on a hot day when you don’t feel like anything heavy.

6. Soul in a Bowl

Soul in a Bowl is a trendy cafe at the southern end of Sanur serving up fantastic fresh food, organic fare in a relaxed atmosphere. Breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner in this lovely spot will satisfy everyone including picky little eaters.

From colorful smoothie bowls, burgers, sandwiches, salads and brunch plates, everything tastes vibrant and fresh. Portion sizes may not be huge, but the flavors certainly are!

7. Warung Kecil

Kecil means small in Bahasa Indonesia, and Warung Kecil is just that. However, it punches way above its weight when it comes to taste! Offering a menu of healthy Indonesian and Balinese favorites like nasi campur, curry, cap cay, and other dishes made with locally sourced ingredients, this restaurant is a go-to spot for locals, expats and tourists.

They also serve excellent salads and sandwiches for the less adventurous kiddos, and the menu has some of the best prices you’ll find in town!

8. Massimo

This long-established Italian eatery in Sanur has been a fave for years with just about everyone. While other restaurants have come and gone, Massimo has stayed true to its traditional Italian style food and has kept the customers coming.

The love and time that goes into their handmade mozzarella, gelato, pasta, and pizzas  sureshows. The food is incredibly tasty, authentic, and extremely family and group friendly.

9. The Porch

Serving up a hearty menu of comfort foods, The Porch is an excellent spot for picky eaters. You can’t go wrong with mac and cheese, toasted sandwiches, and homemade pies, can you? The inside area is always nice and cool thanks to the aircon and the outside seating is cool and shaded. For the adults, the coffee is excellent and there is also fast wifi if you need to check your email
