Copenhagen comes to Canggu: Graze on Danish delights at this cafe’s all-day brunch

COCONUTS HOT SPOT — Just when we thought we had seen it all on this island, Danish food washed up on the shores of Bali in the form of an all-day brunch cafe near Echo Beach.

The whole concept at Copenhagen Canggu is that diners get to put together their own brunch boards to fit their appetites and tastes.

As you sit down, you’re handed a pink and white card broken down into six key categories: bakery, eggs, fruit & greens, dairy, meat & fish, and last but certainly not least, sweets.

Much in the style of dim sum ordering, you tick off the boxes you want with options to take three items for IDR59k (US$4.22), five items for 89k (US$6.38), or the option to add a single item for IDR20k (US$1.43).

You can mix and match, taking a plate from each category like with this potential three-item order: scrambled eggs with chives, a pink smoothie bowl, and Nutella with roasted rye bread.

Or you could go nuts and even get all one category, going for all the meats like this hypothetical carnivorous five-piece order: organic local bacon, organic local farmer sausage, smoked salmon with sour cream, breakfast slider with tomato, sunny side egg, bacon, mayo, and watercress, and Hosesalat slaw with grilled asparagus.

Personally preferring a more balanced out meal, we mixed it up by getting four pieces across different categories, trying the breakfast slider, the mixed bread slices with butter combo, avocado smash (to slather on the breads and slider!), gouda with homemade berry compote, and the homemade Hindbaersnitte, shortbread with raspberry jam for a sweet finish.

If you’d not restricted to a gluten-free diet—which their menu does denote along with vegetarian and lactose-free entries by the way—we recommend mixing breads and going the one slice of sourdough, one slice of Danish rye route so you can get the best of both worlds for the tartness of the former and the ‘cakey-ness’ of the latter. Nothing says brunch like freshly baked bread with good butter. Add in some eggs, something green or fruity, the cheese, and a pastry, and you’ve got yourself the perfect brunch.

Butter is certainly one of the stars at Copenhagen an ingredient that shines through in the raspberry jam shortbread, an item which will have us coming back to the cafe.

Given the price point and the amount of plates you’re allowed to select, you can’t expect huge heaping portions, but we were pleasantly surprised when the food came out with how substantial each plate was.

As with most things Canggu, the vibe is beachy casual yet clearly laid out to become a hot spot with Instagram bloggers. White walls with a photogenic mural, marble-top tables, and food served on wooden cutting boards make for the perfect shot.

But don’t be fooled by the ’gram. The open-air, side-of-the-road cafe is smaller and more chill than the photos would have you believe.
