COCONUTS HOT SPOT — In a place not so dodgy, but just a little shady, a new shack has popped up. Health nuts are going mad for the vegan, gluten AND dairy free overloaded menu at Shady Shack.
Eating there might even convince you to try out a “free-from” diet (nah, who are we kidding! Cake is our most faithful flour-filled friend). At least now none of your dieting mates can complain that they can’t find something to eat.
Although this new Gu spot is hidden with jungle decor and white canopy covered tables, there is no way to miss it with the abundance of people munching. It was about a ten-minute wait to get seated when we checked it out. The last time that happened in Bali must have been when the Dutch colonized Indonesia. It was well worth the wait.
If you believe that there is a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow, then you might become rich after one dish. The meals are more colorful than our summer wardrobe. Our personal favorite, the “nori bowl” (Rp 65k), has everything from seaweed greens to coral ginger, red and brown rice and carrot orange and cabbage purple vegetarian rolls.
The next best thing to finding a pot of gold is obviously all-day breakfast, which Shady Shack also serves. That’s the real jackpot! Try the “chickbeans” (Rp 65k) that comes with Japanese style onsen eggs over mashed avocado and chickpeas with toast on the side. Plain avocado on toast is so last year in comparison to this.
You should expect the three-page menu to leave you hungry for more, and there is always room for dessert. Make sure to ask what daily special raw treats they have because these are deliciously guilt-free sweets.
We’re already craving to come back to this new shack.
Coconuts Hot Spots are notable new restaurants or undiscovered gems around Bali that we think are worth a visit.
