Babi guling lovers, pigs are getting roasted right this weekend and it’s a feast you won’t want to miss

While it may seem like Bali, Ubud especially, is overrun with vegans, the art of roasting meat is still very much alive with Balinese locals.

After all, one of Bali’s most famous dishes is babi guling aka suckling pig.

Babi guling certainly isn’t hard to find in Bali—with warungs on every corner—but it’s not every day you get to be a part of the actual cookout with a Balinese fam-bam.

Celebrating this time-honored tradition of slow-roasting whole pigs over fire, the power couple behind Singaraja’s sustainable living center, Rumah Intaran, is opening up their Balinese family compound for a babi guling feast on Sunday, Nov. 27.

The feast will use babi hitam (black pigs), which is apparently a big deal as you would normally only find them as offerings during ceremonies.

Gede Kresna and Ayu Gayatri will use their own family recipes and locally sourced ingredients for the FIVE-course feast, which will include:

1. Welcome snacks – Jaja Bali – various traditional Balinese sweet snacks

2. Appetizer – Rujak Buleleng – slices of fresh fruits marinated in herb, spices, and palm vinegar

3. Soup – Jukut Buangit – Northern Balinese vegetable soup (FYI, The soup is also the perfect dish to prepare your stomach to digest the main course due to its acidic nature.)

4. Main Course – Babi Guling – made from BABI HITAM, the Balinese indigenous free-range black pigs instead of the more commonly found/commercially bred pink pigs.

5. Dessert – Daluman twist – herbal jelly made from the leaves of the Daluman tree, with cold brew Balinese coffee and coconut milk ice cream

The experience, which Gede and Ayu hope to make regular on a monthly basis, isn’t cheap at Rp 275k, but does include roundtrip transport all the way from Ubud to their place in Singaraja and as aforementioned, includes babi hitam, as well as locally-sourced, natural ingredients—no MSG needed here.

Pork-hungry people should register by Nov. 24 if they want to get in on the action. More info here
