We don’t want to make it sound like we enjoyed writing about foreigners doing outrageous stuff in Bali. But, boy, some people are making it way too easy.

The Balinese people are generally perceived to be tolerant toward outsiders (both Indonesians and foreigners) — although some might argue that they are actually more nonchalant than tolerant.

That being said, the antics that some foreigners got up to this year are too outrageous even for the islanders, so we cannot really blame them for their strong reactions.

Consider this list as a learning opportunity for things you should not do while visiting Bali. Without further ado, here are some of the most ridiculous stories about foreigners doing dumb things in 2022, in no particular order:

Thou shalt not steal

We’re all about respecting people’s beliefs, but surely none of the commandments read “Thou shall steal and tell them it is a gift from I”? Five Moldovans (two of whom are children) and one Russian were deported this year after trespassing a villa in Pererenan. When the rightful owners asked them to leave, they simply stated that the house was a present from God. Well, in this case, their God went AWOL when immigration authorities apprehended them and, ultimately, deported them.

‘Dude, where’s your brain?’

We have stories of unruly foreigners on the streets of Bali (such as this guy who thinks of himself as a MotoGP racer), but so far this one is the most outrageous: peeing on the road while waiting at the traffic light. Kudos to the lady who took a bullet for the rest of us by capturing this WTF act and making it viral. To this date, we still don’t know who this man is. The last thing we know was that immigration was looking for him but it looks like he has evaded them.

The Englishman’s Tale

We first reported about Tyler Delorean’s on Oct. 12, 2022 when he was arrested for shouting conspiracy theories while people were mourning the victims of the 2002 Bali Bombing at the Kuta monument. Delorean became a viral sensation again when he sold burgers out of a motorcycle cart in Kuta. After some online digging, we found out that his real name might not be Delorean at all but Benjamin Granger, claiming himself to be the son of automobile mogul John Delorean. Last time we checked, the burger guy is at the Denpasar Immigration Detention Center, so we’ll see what 2023 has in store for him.

Not so brainy for a beauty queen

Okay, so this one is interesting because some of us might actually agree with Estonian pageant queen Valeria Vasilieva here about police corruption. The thing is, unless you have concrete proof (a video, at least), it is actually not very smart to throw accusations online especially toward the authorities of the country you are visiting. Vasilieva reportedly escaped the authorities as she left the island in quick fashion, while the Miss Global pageant subsequently disqualified her from the competition.

The naked truth

Where do we begin? We’re all for body positivity and being comfortable in your own skin and whatnot, but surely you should know the time and place? These two cases of foreigners being naked on sacred spots just show the level of ignorance of some people who visit Bali.

The Ubudian flasher

And the trophy goes to… This man who decided to ruin the peaceful night of Ubud back in August by flashing his penis and spitting on bystanders. Like, yeah, this just won’t do. On the other hand, we sincerely hope he will be getting the help he needs.
