While the internet can be dark and full of terror sometimes (did any Game of Thrones fans catch that reference?), some of us still scroll our phones in search of fun, light-hearted content to make us chuckle.

For this list, we’ve come up with some of the funniest Instagram accounts focusing on jokes and parodies about life in Bali. From satirical influencers to relatable jokes about the local dating scene, these accounts are all adept at capturing the unique absurdities of living on this paradise island.

We may occasionally update this page should more funny accounts emerge. If you think we’re missing someone that deserves to be on this list, feel free to let us know.

1. @northsidestory

Kicking off this list is @northsidestory, who also has a TikTok handle, @defriedbanana. This local man can definitely give Meryl Streep a run for her money with his uncanny ability to mimic accents commonly heard in Bali. He can do Russian, Spanish, French, Australian and even “Jaksel” AKA South Jakartan youth. He also parodies people in Bali based on their neighborhoods.

He is so comfortable with himself that he does not mind cross-dressing for his content, such as this post where he parodies dating life in Canggu or this one where he pokes fun at Instagram influencers. In this post, he makes fun of snobbish people who like to drive around Bali without a helmet and their cocky demeanor (while, of course, including a PSA caption telling people to obey traffic rules).

The epitome of a laid-back island guy who does not take himself seriously, @northsidestory is definitely worth following.

2. @thecanggupole

The @thecanggupole can perhaps be a bit self-deprecating in their approach to comedy, but that’s probably why so many people who live in Canggu find their posts relatable, such as the one below commenting on Jalan Raya Canggu‘s traffic, or this one commenting on where in Bali you should go based on what you want to get out of life.

3. @overheard_in_canggu (and @overheardbali)

Undoubtedly inspired by Overheard in NY, @overheard_in_canggu curates outrageous things people allegedly overheard during their time in Bali’s most happening hood. Their account is open to DMs by people who want to submit what they claim to have heard and while some may be made up, they are all definitely amusing.

We put @overheardbali as an honorable mention here because most of the posts in that account are in Indonesian. Still, they have some good, relatable posts, such as this one commenting on Jakartans “working from Bali.”

4. @ubudonacid

Okay, this one is pretty dark. @ubudonacid pokes fun at stereotypes of people in Ubud people and their antics (and some of their … problematic behaviors), including archetypical characters such as life coaches and spiritual “gurus”. Some of the jokes are actually quite pointed, highlighting issues such as privilege, toxic positivity, and appropriation.

Again, some of their jokes might not be for everyone. But if there’s any place in the world where we can chill out and appreciate comedy, it’s Bali. Don’t forget to laugh, people.
