8 times bules in Bali probably should have put more clothes on

We get it, it’s hot as heck in Bali and you certainly can’t call us prudes. But there’s a time and a place for bikinis and swimwear and sitting smack dab in the middle of a traditional Balinese ceremony whilst taking tourist photos is not that time nor that place.

Most of the following outfits are totally acceptable beach wear, especially in Bali where all too often, anything goes. But remember, context is everything and the people in these photos probably should have put more clothes on at the time these pics were snapped whether it be for practicial or cultural sensitivity reasons.

So, here we bring you eight instances of people who probably shouldn’t have let it all hang out right then and there:

1. Clearly someone must have stolen their clothes while they were swimming.

2. This is just not safe. Sure we ride all the time in shorts, sandals, and tank tops (which means our skin would literally be scrapped off in a crash, eep!), but most of these people are riding on the toll without helmets. Not only is that plain illegal in Bali and forget insurance covering you if you get into an accident, but going on the main road without a helmet is putting yourself at the mercy of some pretty crazy drivers (of all nationalities).

3. We don’t care whether you’re a super model or bootylicious like this gal. Bikini on the bike on a major road in Bali just doesn’t feel right. Not only is this asking for some major skin scrapping if they were to get into an accident, but she’s also going to get a sun burn, not to mention that the children can see you. Think of the children! Sure they probably have access to all sorts of fun images on the internet, but you don’t need to be one more graphic image for them to never unsee.

4. If we’re not down with bikini’s on the bike, then as you can guess, full on nudity is just a bit too far. And how would riding backwards on a motorbike ever be a good idea?

5. Sure, these people are on the beach, the natural habitat of swimwear, but there’s a ceremony going on here. If you’re going to hover over processions, you might want to throw some t-shirts and a sarong on.

6. Honestly, if you’re here to learn about Balinese culture and photograph its beautiful tendencies, would you really want to steal the show and become the main attraction?

7. No this ain’t Coachella bros.

8. While there’s an appropriate setting for all the above pics (even the nude one: in the bedroom, duh), there is no right place for this guy’s outfit other than a Borat movie or a frat party.

We’d also like to add that by and large, foreigners need to remember that they are guests in Bali, whether tourists popping over for a quick vacations or expats in it for the long haul, respect the local culture. Read the situation and throw a sarong on it if need be.

Like we said, there’s a time and place for your skin to show. Balinese have a history of being comfortable in their own skin, but just because women looked like this before tourism, doesn’t mean you should try to replicate the look:

If you REALLY want to play it safe, when in doubt if you’re appropriately outfitted or not, you can just take Bali immigration’s recommendation and dress like Kate Middleton and not Rihanna.
