Lobster rolls just got a little cheaper (sorry, Chunky Lobsters) at the newly-opened Lobsters & Ice Cream, where the crustacean-on-bun combo starts from a wallet-friendly price tag of $14. And if you’re going for a crab roll, it’s $9 out of your pocket. Feeling generous? Shell out $23 for half of each on a mixed roll.
Crammed into a tiny space surrounded by the bustle of Chinatown eateries, the stall is more of a takeaway kiosk, with just a few seats by the roadside. Its seafood is fresh — lobsters were cut up right in front of our eyes — and everything’s done to order, as it should be. (Though that means you’ll have to wait a bit longer to get your roll.)
Here, you can pick your preferred flavor from four varieties: Maine-style (sautéed or chilled with butter, lemon, mayo, and herbs), chilli crab (with shrimp and anchovy), melted cheese, and mentaiko (spicy pollock/cod roe, flying fish roe, mayo and seaweed flakes for an extra $2).
Going for the most basic option, Maine-style, the pillowy brioche bun was crisp on the outside and our lobster chunks were sweet, juicy, and nicely buttered, although we found a couple of shell bits left behind. If you prefer your lobster rolls drenched in a generous drizzle of sauce, perhaps go for the chilli crab or mentaiko option.
To make a meal out of it, $2 will get you chips, $2.50 will get you your choice of iced or hot matcha, houjicha, or genmaicha teas, $4 will get you soft serve in flavors like vanilla, matcha, or milk tea, and $4.50 will get you a bowl of seafood soup (which changes daily).
