Chunky Lobsters opens new outlet in the CBD with crab rolls going for $16

When Chunky Lobsters first opened in the CBD, it was swarmed with office workers hungry for affordable lobster rolls. Early queues at the Oxley Tower branch were almost enough to turn away anyone on a strict, one-hour lunch break, except that the appeal of generously-portioned $16 seafood buns was just too much for the average bargain-hunting Singaporean to reject.

The store did so well that it opened a second outlet at The Cathay — there’s one good reason for you to visit the always-empty mall — and now it’s got its eye on a different breed of crustacean. Taking up a unit at China Square, Chunky Crabs is the natural progression of the brand, which touts its “seafood made affordable” motto everywhere it goes. The space may be on the smaller side, but hey, that’s what takeaway boxes are for. Plus, when something’s worth it, the Singaporean crowds will come.

Similar in concept to Chunky Lobsters, the new place only offers three varieties of crab rolls. They’re all decently priced at $16 each, naturally, and the toasted brioche buns are packed with liberal chunks of sweet crab meat, just like what you’d expect at its lobster-centric sister joint.

Purists can try the original Chunky’s Butter, which, like its name suggests, enhances the crab meat with mere drizzles of butter. But if you’d prefer a rendition of chilli crab, Chunky’s Chilli comes slathered in the familiar sauce. Alternatively, have your crab cold and get Chunky’s Aioli for a mixture of mayo, celery, lemon, and a dash of cayenne pepper sprinkled atop the meat. Each order is packed with a side of cassava chips for you to munch on in between bites, and other items on the limited menu include crab bisque and bottled beers.
