Lobster rolls that won’t empty out your wallet? Uh-huh, they actually exist, and you can find them at a new eatery in the CBD, of all places. Those working in the Oxley Tower vicinity may have already discovered Chunky Lobsters, but if you haven’t, just know that it does live up to its tagline of “Seafood Made Affordable”.
With a menu featuring three different lobster roll varieties — all going for S$16 a pop — this is the type of place that you make a beeline for when you have a very specific craving.
No matter which option you choose, you’ll get entire chunks of sweet flesh generously stuffed into a soft brioche bun; but safe to say you probably can’t go wrong with Chunky’s Original (just the name itself inspires confidence), which comes drizzled with mayo, lemon, and a blend of herbs and spices.
As for Chunky’s Connecticut, it’s a simple roll coated with melted butter, while Chunky’s Cheezy is exactly what you’d expect — a bun layered with various melted cheeses. You can also choose to add on lemonade and lobster bisque to get the set meal for S$3.90, which still maintains your overall price tag below S$20.
Compared to other places serving up lobster rolls in the vicinity, Chunky Lobsters offers one of the lowest prices we’ve seen. Take The Market Grill at Telok Ayer, for example. Its Maine/Boston crustacean roll (served whole with a side of salad and fries) will set you back a mind-boggling S$52.
Then there’s Luke’s Oyster Bar & Chop House at Gemmill Lane — admittedly, it’s got a stellar menu, and you can never go wrong with burgers here, but a lobster roll at lunch will cost you S$48. And let’s not forget Pince & Pints at Duxton Road. It’s as obsessed with lobsters as a restaurant can be, and already its roll with fries and salad comes with a price tag of S$58.
Still, keep in mind that Chunky Lobsters is more of a takeaway joint, so you won’t get to savor your food with proper dine-in service here. But from early five-starred reviews on its Facebook page, it looks like it’s shaping up to be quite the value-for-money option for when you’re not exactly flush, but still feeling kinda fancy.
