Hope fading for safe rescue of worker trapped in rubble of collapsed Bekasi building

A tragedy occurred at a construction site in Bekasi today as an emergency stairwell in the Apartemen Grand Kamala Lagoon collapsed from the 30th floor and fell to the ground, trapping a worker identified as 21-year-old Pajar Sidik in the basement of the building since early this morning.

“We’re still trying to evacuate the victim who was trapped under the rubble from the collapsed emergency stairwell,” said South Bekasi Police Chief Bayu Pratama this afternoon, as quoted by Okezone.

Bayu said that rescue workers heard cries for help from Pajar from under the rubble at around 5 am to 6 am, but the cries have since stopped. As of the time of Okezone’s interview with Bayu, Pajar already had been trapped for 11 hours.

Unfortunately, authorities believe that their chances of rescuing Pajar is slim.

“Until now (Pajar’s) body is trapped by rubble, and we’re having difficulty evacuating him because of all the rubble. Considering that he’s been trapped for 11 hours with no food or drink, we’re pessimistic that he can be rescued. But please pray for him,” Bayu said.

Rescue workers are removing the rubble carefully so as to prevent further injury to Pajar.

Hopefully authorities will find a way reach him in time so that he can survive this tragedy.
