Head of Jakarta Police Safety Intelligence, Anthony Ginter Dwi Hendro, estimated that 40,000 people have come out to attend the parade for newly inaugurated President Joko Widodo and Vice President Jusuf Kalla, filling up the road from Thamrin to Sudirman all the way up to the National Monument (Monas).
“According to our information, there are 40,000 people who have come out to enjoy the carnival activities and welcome new president,” Anthony said.
According to his sources, the group of 40,000 people are largely made up of those who support Jokowi, but Anthony also said police could not rule out the possibility that protesters could be contained within the crowds, planning some sort of action. Therefore. he said, the police would be on full alert.
“The possibility of a protest still exist, but the probability is very small, as the majority of those attending the event support the president,” Anthony said.
Towards that end, Antony said police have already positioned tens of thousands of personnel who are currently on standby at hotspots throughout the crowd.
“Police personnel will be maintain until the event is over in the evening at Monas,” said Antony.
Crowds thronged the fast lane of Jalan Sudirman, chanting the name of the seventh president of Indonesia while taking photos on their cellphones of Jokowi, who was sitting in the presidential car accompanied by his security guards.
