The Jakarta Metro Police has confirmed that one of its officers was involved in a shooting in Bintaro, which killed one person and injured another.

Zulpan, the Jakarta Metro Police’s spokesman, said today that the shooter, identified by his initials OS, is an officer from its Highway Patrol Unit (PJR). He is currently detained at the Jakarta Metro Police HQ, though he has yet to be criminally charged.

The shooting had occurred last Saturday, with victims PP and MA having sustained heavy injuries on their stomachs as a result. One of them eventually succumbed to their injuries at the hospital on Sunday.

At a press conference today, the Jakarta Metro Police’s General Crime Unit Director Tubagus Ade Hidayat laid out the events that led to the shooting. According to him, OS was initially responding to a report from a civilian, identified by his initial O, who claimed that his life was in danger.

O said he felt threatened as he was being tailed by three cars, on which PP and MA were among the passengers, since he left a hotel in Sentul, West Java on Friday evening. O then contacted OS, who was on duty at the PJR office in Pondok Pinang, South Jakarta.

O then filed a formal report at the PJR office, not long after which a commotion occurred, somehow leading to OS firing his weapon. Police have yet to offer more specific details on what went down.

“O told the police officer that he was about to be hit [by a tailing car] and then two gunshots were fired, which hit the two victims.”

O’s claim of having been tailed is currently being investigated by the Jakarta Metro Police’s General Crime Directorate and an investigation into the case is still ongoing.
