A search and rescue team was dispatched to the trails of Mount Agung yesterday, after reports came in that five teenagers were too exhausted to carry on with their hiking trip.

The group reportedly started their journey on Monday afternoon, and stayed the night before continuing their journey back down the volcano. According to a statement from the Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) in Bali, one of them then contacted their family for help.

“Information from the person who made the report, who is also family of one of the victims, said they may have been fatigued [from the hike],” Basarnas Bali Head Gede Darmada said.

Gede said the agency received the report at almost 7pm yesterday evening, and dispatched a team comprising 8 people at about 8:45pm.

With the group having mentioned the hike point closest to their location, authorities managed to rescue them about an hour later at 2,000 meters above sea level.

Aside from their exhaustion, there were no reports of the teenagers getting hurt during the hike.
