University of Yangon holds book fair and exhibition as part of its 96th-anniversary commemorative activities

In honor of the University of Yangon’s 96th anniversary, the University Library is holding an exhibition and book fair from December 6 to 9 at the university grounds. The event was jointly organized by the University of Yangon Library and the Myanmar Publishers and Booksellers Association.

Over 100 bookstores are participating in the event and have stalls set up on the garden inside the compound. All books are being sold at discounts of 10% or more off. Most of the books are Myanmar-language, although you’ll find a few English ones as well.

Inside the library building, visitors can also view the library’s book collection and a display of old postcards featuring the university.

The fair and exhibition are part of a three-week long series of events hosted by the university to celebrate their 96th anniversary. Every day from December 1 to 18, there will be various events including conferences, readings, workshops, and talks.

The university plans to have similar celebrations every year for the next four years until its centennial celebration in 2020.

The next event in this year’s series will take place on December 9, where Dr Kyaw Win from the university’s history department will hold a talk on the fascinating history of the university, which in the 1940s and 1950s, was the most prestigious university in Southeast Asia.

The University of Yangon is located on Pyay Road near Hledan Junction.
