You’re not imagining it: Yangon is experiencing a ‘July drought’

If it feels like the rainy season hasn’t been so bad lately, that’s because it really hasn’t.

Yangon is experiencing a “July drought” according to government forecasters. In other words, we’re getting some sunshine at long last.

Dr Kyaw Moe Oo, Deputy Director General of the Weather Forecasting Department, told the Voice the monsoon had temporarily weakened in the Bay of Bengal, which lies in between Myanmar and Bangladesh.

“There will be less rain because of weaker monsoon wind,” he said. “This is called the July drought.”

According to the department’s predictions, several parts of Myanmar including Yangon, Bago, Irrawaddy and Tanintharyi regions as well as Karen and Mon states will have less rain over the next few days.

All the rain is up north, apparently.

However, once the monsoon strengthens it’ll be back to usual. So enjoy those sunlit mornings while you can.
