In an effort to end shortages and cater to the rising population, the Yangon City Development Committee and the Japan International Cooperation Agency plan to revamp the city’s water distribution network.
Under new plans released by Mayor Maung Maung Soe, there will be 10 water supply zones, each with measures to control wastage. New pipes will also be installed, the Global New Light of Myanmar reported.
Under the current system, about 205 million gallons of water is piped to 60 per cent of the total population. Tube wells are in place in some areas of the city, but underground water is not always of good enough quality to use.
