YCDC has sued more than 1,200 street vendors this year over ‘undisciplined’ behavior: report

More than 1,200 street sellers in Yangon have been sued by the Yangon City Development Committee so far this year over “undisciplined” behavior.

The offences rang from selling goods in restricted areas to keeping their stalls open during certain times. For example, in some areas, vendors are not allowed to sell in the morning.

Unsurprisingly, the stall-holders facing civil lawsuits aren’t too happy about it.

“We are selling things beside the street honestly because we’re poor,” Tin New, a vendor from Kyauktada township, told the Voice. “YCDC is always planning to eliminate vendors.”

YCDC denies that they are planning a whole-scale eviction of vendors from the city.

“We are not eliminating all the vendors,” an unnamed official from the planning department said. “We are taking action against those who are undisciplined.”
