Yangon’s Strand Hotel to shut down in May for months long renovation

The Strand Hotel – you know, that massive structure on Strand Road – is closing down on May 1 for an extensive renovation that will last six months.

Yup, six months.

Travel Daily Asia reports that the project will include redoing the hotel’s 31 suites and maintaining the “classic colonial style” while adding a “contemporary twist.”

Hardly a corner of the hotel, which has existed in one form or another for more than 100 years, will be left untouched, according to the article.

Fans of Friday night drinks at the bar will, alas, have to wait six months to resume their routine. The bar and the restaurant are also undergoing renovation.

A receptionist at the hotel confirmed the shut down, saying that the Strand would be “all closed” through October.

Hopefully the new version is worth the wait.
