Yangon’s circular line train decapitates man sleeping on track

A 20-year-old man was killed on Friday when one of Yangon’s circular line trains decapitated him as he was slept on the track.

The train was traveling somewhere between Mingalardon Station and Yangon Central when it laborer Ko Ko Maung was run over. Another man named Chit San Maung, 18, managed to escape with broken hands and wounds to his head and face, the Voice Weekly reported, citing the North Okkala Police Station.

Japan’s International Cooperation Agency, or JICA, has upgraded many of the carriages traveling the nearly 30-mile loop around Yangon, and is planning on refurbishing parts of the track and several stations.

Safety is a concern, with many people living cheek by jowl next to passing trains, or walking home along the route.

Yangon police are investigating.
