A Vietnamese ship transporting cement sank into the Yangon River on Monday after breaking anchor and colliding with an oil tanker.
What could have been a major disaster – both human and environmental – was averted as the crew members were rescued and the oil tanker sustained no significant damage, according to local media reports.
The ship, identified as the MV Dong Then Phu Silver, hit the MT Ocean Osprey in the early afternoon, the Global New Light of Myanmar reported.
An officer from a local police station told the Voice Weekly that the all 14 sailors aboard the Vietnamese vessel were rescued.
“No one is dead or missing,” the officer was quoted as saying.
