Yangon radar station that can spot distant storms set to open in October

A weather radar station capable of detecting storms hundreds of miles from Yangon is set to start operating in October.

The 18-storey station on Kabar Aye Pagoda Road, built using advanced Japanese technology, will allow the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology to provide accurate early warnings of extreme weather.

“We are totally done with building and installing the machine,” chief engineer Ye Htut told the Voice. “Now it is running as a test and it can start [officially] in October if the test is OK.”

Construction on the project, which is funded by JICA, began in September. One station has already opened in Kyaukpyu township, Rakhine state and another is still underway in Mandalay.

The Kyaukpyu station was tested by the arrival of Cyclone Komen off the Rakhine coast last year.
