Yangon police swap photo of suspect in maid abuse case without handcuffs for one with handcuffs

Yangon authorities have arrested a 5th suspect in the case of two maids who were allegedly abused by a family for five years in a downtown Yangon house on 40th street.

The case and especially the police response are being followed closely after a journalist from Myanmar Now revealed that law enforcement had been slow to act and the national human rights commission negotiated compensation.

But with this latest arrest, the police seemed to have learned learn their lesson, at least when it comes to outrage on social media.

First they uploaded a photo of the 25-year-old man, identified as Yar Zar Htun, without handcuffs. About an hour later after angry comments appeared on their Facebook page, they deleted the photo and uploaded a new one with him in handcuffs.

Of course, that just prompted more comments, this time about the swap.

“You deleted the previous post and just updated the photo with handcuffs,” someone wrote.

But the new image was appreciated.

“Just post this kind of photo with handcuffs,” another comment read.
