It’s been less than two weeks since the Yangon Regional Police opened a 24-hour hotline for concerned citizens to report crime, but they’re already struggling with an onslaught of prank calls.
The force posted on its Facebook page that they receive an average of 120 calls daily but fewer than half of those are legitimate. An average of 80 each day report fake or nonsense offences or are simply someone having a laugh, the post said.
“There are only 40 calls [daily] that provide real information,” it read. “So, Yangon police request to the public not to make jokes or fake calls, and to collaborate with police.”
Seriously, they need to focus on more pressing matters. Like, say, cracking down on your favorite beer stations.
If anyone has something real to say, the number is 199 or 01-2323199. Sadly, urgent food delivery requests probably don’t count.
