A suspected hit-and-run driver was arrested today for allegedly killing a motorcycle passenger and dragging its driver beneath his vehicle after hitting them downtown Yangon in front of People’s Park.
A female passenger aboard a courier-company owned bike died on the scene after the driver of a black Ford SUV struck it at about 12:50am on Sunday. The driver was arrested after a man aboard the motorcycle became pinned under the SUV as it fled the scene and was dragged all the way to the driver’s home garage.
A dozen personnel from the Ahlone and Sanchaung township fire stations found the woman deceased when they arrived with an ambulance to the scene in front of the Happy World Amusement Center on Shin Saw Pu Road in Yangon’s Sanchaung Township.
A search carried out by five auxiliary firefighters eventually tracked the man back to the SUV driver’s garage. There, rescuers from the Ye Thurein Charitable Group managed to extricate him from under the car.
“Our team provided oxygen to the patient and rescued him by cutting off some of the underparts of the car,” said a spokesperson from the Ye Thurein Charitable Group, whose personnel managed to rescue the man.
He was taken to Yangon General Hospital with severe injuries.
The location of the suspect’s home was undisclosed, and the authorities withheld his name from release. To the shocking surprise of no one, rumors and speculation pointed toward the family of a well-connected figure.
The motorcyclist was scheduled for brain surgery last night, according to the group, which posted a graphic video of the dramatic rescue.
People expressed their best wishes for his recovery and condemned the hit-and-run driver.
“Running away after hitting a person should be severely punished. If the driver didn’t run away, the man wouldn’t have suffered this way,” Facebook user Tin Min Htet wrote.
