Yangon authorities plan to boost power supply, cite ‘lessons’ from terrible summer

Yangon authorities plan to boost the city’s power supply to 1,400 megawatts, after searing heat and crippling outages combined to create a pretty insufferable summer this year.

“Taking lessons from this summer’s power outages in Yangon, preparations that include the installation of more transformers and power lines are being made to avoid electricity failure next summer,” said Thant Zin, general manager of the Yangon Electricity Supply Corporation, at a press conference in Naypyitaw on Thursday.

A total of K100 billion is needed to bring 24-hour power to the city, he said, according to the Global New Light of Myanmar. Seeing as the YESC reportedly has a budget of K20 billion per year, that leaves a rather large shortfall.

Thant Zin said the organization has reported its budgetary needs to the regional government and state counselor Aung San Suu Kyi.

The new government came in for a lot of criticism during the summer, which arrived soon after it was sworn in. The military might be out, but we might have to wait a while before the people get their power back, literally.
