Workers spotted fixing 8 Mile flyover after photos of cracks go viral

The 8 Mile flyover, on the corner of Pyay and Kabar Aye Pagoda Roads, finally opened yesterday after months of wearying construction.

But, within hours of the unveiling, photos appearing to show cracks in the concrete went viral on social media. The images could not be independently verified.

Now, Eleven Media is reporting that engineers carried out repair work overnight. In response to the social media storm? It’s unclear, but an engineer from the $7 million project told them construction had not yet finished.

“It’s not true that the bridge is cracked. And the construction is not completely over. We allowed cars to pass as we have mostly done it. If it was dangerous, we would not allow cars to drive over it.”

The 8 Mile overpass is one among several controversial flyover projects the city has undertaken in recent months in an attempt to ease Yangon’s worsening traffic crisis.
