Woman says thieves in Hlaing Tharyar township stole $30,000 in jewelry from her

Men on a motorbike snatched a woman’s bag in Hlaing Tharyar township on Saturday and made off with jewelry worth an estimated $30,000, police said.

The alleged incident was said to occur on Butaryone Street, 7Day News Journal reported.

On Saturday the 48-year-old victim, who owns a jewelry shop in Saunchang township, was coming home when she stopped at a phone shop.

“When she went outside of the phone shop, her bag was grabbed near a container truck,” a police officer told 7Day. “She said that there were two men aged 20 and 30.”

A 30-year-old local resident said the street was notorious for petty theft.

“I put my wallet in my longyi and it was robbed. Two men with a motorbike robbed me in the daytime,” he told 7Day.

The suspects in the weekend bag snatching are still at large. The man who had his wallet stolen also says police never caught his assailants.
