A 22-year-old woman was tragically killed on the tracks near the Hledan Railway Station due to her headphones blocking out the noise of an oncoming train. The accident took place around 7 am yesterday morning, and involved a train that was heading towards Insein Station via the Yangon Circular Railway.

According to the police report, the body suffered several cuts and bruises, and a severed leg.

“She had earphones in and started walking along the tracks towards the rail station. It seems like she didn’t know the train was approaching from behind. People nearby were shouting at her but she didn’t hear them because of the earphones,” a witness recounted to 7Day.

The woman was originally from the town of Pyu in the Bago region, but was renting a room in Kamayut Township.

While accidents on the circular railway aren’t common, they do occur several times a year. According to official reports, there were 18 deaths and 24 injuries on the railway in 2016.
