After less than two months online, the popular Myanmar meme page @baelachaung has disappeared from Instagram, along with all of its content.

@baelachaung’s witty, penetrating memes attracted more than 1,500 followers in the page’s short existence by taking aim at stereotypes in Myanmar urban society that were both immediately recognizable and overdue for categorization and analysis, at least in English.

Coconuts interviewed the two ladies who managed the account while it was still up, and they explained that they were motivated to start a meme page by the belief that “laughter is the best medicine.”

Why, then, did they cut off our medicine supply?

We reached out to them, and they explained that they are taking a “social media hiatus” and that they will be back eventually.

Addressing their fans, they said: “Stay tuned.”

To see what remains of @baelachaung’s legacy before they launch their comeback, check out our interview with the account’s managers here.
