Weather warning issued as minor cyclone forms off coast

The government has issued a weather warning over a minor cyclone that has developed in the northeastern Bay of Bengal.

The tropical depression is not likely to move towards Myanmar, according to the Department of Meterology and Hydrology, which has given a yellow alert.

Nonetheless, we can expect heavy rainfall, strong winds and flash flooding in Yangon and elsewhere over the next two days, state-run newspaper the Global New Light of Myanmar reported.

The full list of areas affected also includes: Sagaing, Mandalay, Magwe, Ayeyarwady and Bago regions and Shan, Chin, Rakhine, Kayin and Mon states.

Flooding in Mandalay region and Shan state claimed several lives over the weekend.
