Watch: Rangoon celebrates Independence Day in 1948

Happy Independence Day, Myanmar!

As we all know, 69 years ago today, Myanmar officially became an independent country. At 4:20 am — a time specifically chosen by astrologers as the most favorable hour for the momentous occasion — the Union Jack flag was lowered for the last time at the Government House in Yangon, and replaced by the flag of the new independent Burma.

As a gesture of goodwill, the British government gifted a car to the Union of Burma’s new President Soe Shwe Thaik.

This is an image of the Declaration of Independence of Burma:

A short clip obtained by ITN Source shows the lowering of the flag, and of Burma’s last British Governor, Sir Hubert Rance, boarding the Cruise of Birmingham to leave the country.

As for the people themselves, the majority of the city gathered at Shwedagon Pagoda and attended fun fairs — much like they’re doing today. A water pageant and jeep rides around town were also involved.
