Voter list concerns won’t delay election: UEC

A senior official at the Union Election Commission (UEC) says objections to the accuracy of the voter list won’t cause the November 8 poll to be postponed.

UEC coordinator Thaung Hlaing was responding to a specific request by the Farmers’ Development Party to push the election date back by three months to create enough time to fix the alleged errors, the Voice Weekly reported.

Complaints about the list are rife, with many saying it is outdated and includes the names of dead people.

Thaung Hlaing said there are ongoing efforts to correct the errors before citizens head to the booths to vote in what is already being billed as a historic election.

“This voter list is fundamental list. We give the chance to make it right. We extend the time. There will be one more chance to make it right again. We replied to them that we can’t postpone it,” he said.
