Authorities say that nearly 90 villages in Sagaing Division’s Kawlin Township are in desperate need after heavy flooding rendered many of them difficult to reach.
Nearly 5,000 people live in the hard-to-access villages, 7Day Daily reported. Local children are studying in relief camps because schools have closed.
The Myanmar Times is reporting that about 49,000 people in Kawlin have been affected by the floods out of a population of approximately 145,000.
Volunteers and aid workers are helping but linking up with the more remote communities is increasingly difficult. One Coconuts Yangon contributor said that a boat involved in rescue work got lost for hours floating in the middle of nowhere last night.
At least 20 people have been killed in flooding that has hit places in the north like Sagaing (see our photo essay on conditions there).
Storms on the northwestern coast are sweeping in the heavy rains and high winds.
7Day Daily reported that an official from the weather forecasting department said flooding and landslides are expected in Sagaing, Mandalay Division, Magwe Division, Chin State and Rakhine State. Yangon and Irrawaddy Divisions will also be affected, the official said.
