Several videos that have gone viral this week capture a Myanmar maid jumping to her death from the 18th floor of the Interlace Condo in Singapore on Monday.
The Myanmar embassy in Singapore has identified the woman as 25-year-old Zin Mar Oo, an ethnic Myo from Rakhine State. The embassy is now working on informing the woman’s family in Myanmar of her death.
An embassy official told the Myanmar Times yesterday that the cause of Zin Mar Oo’s suicide is unknown and that police are investigating the case.
Zin Mar Oo had reportedly been working for a family that lived in the building for the last eight months and had a work permit form the Singaporean government.
The videos show the woman perched on a ledge of the condominium as people off-camera attempt to converse with her, asking her about the weather in her home country.
The videos also show the Singapore Civil Defence Force setting up safety nets and cushions below the woman. She jumped before the equipment was set up.
Singapore police and the Myanmar embassy have yet to release official statements on the maid’s death.
According to the Myanmar Overseas Employment Agencies Federation, there are about 40,000 Myanmar domestic workers in Singapore. The Myanmar government temporarily banned sending domestic workers to Singapore in 2014 following several high-profile cases of abuse.
