Htin Kyaw, who was today elected Myanmar’s first president, has spoken to the media for the first time since speculation about his nomination began last month, Mizzima is reporting.
Speaking to journalists after this morning’s parliamentary session, the 69-year-old senior aide to Aung San Suu Kyi said: “It comes from the love and kindness of people. This is the victory of the people. And this is the victory of sister Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. Thank you all.”
Htin Kyaw won 360 votes out of a total of 652 cast by lawmakers in Naypyitaw this morning. He will take office April 1.
Chin minority candidate Henry Van Thio scored 79 while the military’s pick, Myint Swe, won 213.
