USDP member arrested after loudspeaker tirade against Suu Kyi

A local Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) coordinator in Bago Division has been charged for broadcasting profanity on a loudspeaker directed at Burmese President Htin Kyaw and State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi.

Myo Chit, a party campaigner in Inya village in the town of Wethtikan is being sued by local National League for Democracy chairman Aung Ngwe for obscenity and defamation.

It is alleged that on 26 July, he played in public a video file that had been circulating on social media of a man ranting in vile language about Suu Kyi and the government, calling the state counsellor a “whore”.

Eyewitness Tin Aye, who has been called as a witness in the case, said, “He [Myo Chit] played it once around 3pm in the afternoon of 10 July, and so we reported it to the village administrator Kyaw Myint. Then he played it again around 10am on 21 July; around 5pm on 23 July; and at 1pm on 24 July.”

Myo Chit was arrested by police in Wethtikan on Tuesday evening, and his phone confiscated as evidence. Pyay district police chief said he was released on bail on Wednesday.
