US removes sanctions on Tay Za’s wife

The US has removed sanctions on the wife of Tay Za, one of Myanmar’s richest businessmen.

Thidar Zaw was blacklisted in 2007 along with her husband, who heads the Htoo company, and various cronies associated with the former military junta.

The US Treasury named her in a notice published on its website Thursday, saying she was among a list of people no longer under sanctions.

Her husband was not listed.

Sanctions against Soe Win, the former Prime Minister and Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces, were lifted. He died in 2007.

The US began lifting sanctions on Myanmar in 2012 after the transition to semi-civilian government began.
