Yangon police have revealed that one of the men arrested for the daytime robbery of a travel agency office on Sunday was an employee of the company.

Around noon on Sunday, two young men wearing medical masks entered MK Travels and Tours in Kyauktada Township and pretended to want to buy tickets to Singapore before sticking up Poe Pwint Phyu, who was the only employee in the office that day.

The men tied Poe Pwint Phyu’s hands and feet with rope, gagged her with cloth, and forced her into a bathroom as they robbed the office. According to the latest reports, they left with around K7 million in cash, as well as a diamond ring and gold bracelet belonging to Poe Pwint Phyu.

After the men left, Poe Pwint Phyu managed to call her brother, who came to the office, found his sister tied up, and called the police.

Poe Pwint Phyu told police that her coworker Myat Thiha Tun was meant to have been in the office that day but had not shown up. Police reviewed the office’s CCTV footage and found that one of the robbers resembled Myat Thiha Tun. When the police came to his home in Tamwe Township at around 6pm on Sunday, Myat Thiha Tun confessed to having committed the robbery with his friend Zwe Marn Oo.

Myat Thiha Tun said he had been working at the travel agency for three months and had decided to rob it because he was in need of money. He told police he chose to rob the office at that time because he knew his coworker would be alone.

Police also arrested Zaw Marn Oo at his home in Tamwe Township, where they also found the diamond ring, the gold bracelet and over K4 million.

The two suspects have been charged Section 341 (Wrongful restraint) and Section 392 (Robbery) of the Penal Code.
