UN’s Ban Ki-moon expected to speak at Myanmar’s historic peace talks this month

This is a big “get” for Aung San Suu Kyi.

United Nations secretary general Ban Ki-Moon will speak at the 21st Century Panglong Conference in Naypyitaw, the Global New Light of Myanmar reported.

The conference, starting on August 31, is the launch of fresh peace talks between the new government led by Suu Kyi and several ethnic groups.

It’s not clear if he will speak on August 31 or the next day, New Light reported.

Suu Kyi, who holds the positions of foreign minister and state counsellor, among other posts, has said that bringing peace fo Myanmar is a major priority.

After a recent trip to China, several holdout groups who have received military and other support from Myanmar’s bigger neighbor, have agreed to attend the conference, a significant victory for Suu Kyi.

The conference is named after the 1947 Panglong conference, presided over by Suu Kyi’s father, the independence hero Aung San who was assassinated the same year.

Many point to the original agreement as a framework for greater autonomy for ethnic groups in the country.
