Three government workers at the Myanmar-Bangladesh border were shot and injured yesterday by what state media has termed “unknown terrorists from Bangladesh,” prompting the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to formally summon the Bangladeshi ambassador with a diplomatic note urging action.

The government-owned Global New Light of Myanmar cited a Ministry of Information source in reporting that a border outpost had been attacked by the unknown shooters at 7:44am on Thursday, injuring two policemen and a worker who was repairing a fence.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs then summoned Manjurul Karim Khan Chowdury, Bangladesh’s ambassador to Myanmar, briefed him on the incident, and submitted a diplomatic note, urging him to take measures to prevent future attacks from happening.

Rakhine State has been embroiled in conflict since the Arakan Army launched pre-dawn attacks on four border police outposts earlier this month, killing 13 members of Myanmar’s Border Guard Police and injuring nine others.

Myanmar’s northwestern state is also where Myanmar military launched a brutal military campaign that drove out 730,000 Rohingya Muslims into neighboring Bangladesh, which the United Nations, various international human rights watchdogs and diplomats have described as a “textbook” example of ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity, committed with “genocidal intent”.
