Uh oh, Myanmar beer maker wants to make way more Myanmar beer

Good news for people who like Myanmar Beer, and terrible news for people who don’t.

They are going to make more of it.

Japan’s Kirin this month bought a 55 percent stake in Myanmar Brewery, which is owned by Union of Myanmar Economic Holdings.

At a press conference to formally announce the partnership in Yangon’s Sedona hotel yesterday, the company said it would boost production from 2 to 3 million hectolitres annually, because apparently, everyone’s clamoring for Myanmar beer and related brands.

“Demand and supply are out of balance in the local market, the demand is always higher, so we plan to brew more beer from now on,” the brewery’s chairman, Nay Win said, as quoted by the Irrawaddy.

And for those who thought Kirin’s help might, ya know, improve quality or introduce some cool new local beverage? Sorry. The partnership will focus on increasing production and marketing.

So be prepared to see way more Myanmar Beer, Andaman Gold and the always reliable Myanmar Double Strong at your beer stations and local shops.
