Two police officials are dead after a fatal confrontation involving a knife at a guesthouse in Yangon’s Thanlyin Township, according to local media reports.
The slain policemen, identified in the Voice Weekly as local police chief Aung Naing and Sergeant Thura Lwin, were attempting to arrest 47-year-old suspect Tin Myint at his guesthouse around 11am yesterday.
The Global New Light of Myanmar says Tin Myint was wanted on charges of robbery, theft and assault going back to 2014. He was caught the same day as the alleged murders and is in police custody.
It’s unclear how things spiralled out of control when the two men went to the Natural Beauty guesthouse to make the arrest.
Sergeant Thura Lwin was stabbed in the chest and Chief Aung Naing was slashed in his neck, the Voice reported. The wounds proved fatal. They were 35 and 45 years old, respectively.
Tin Myint was apparently tracked down not long afterwards with the help of local motorbike drivers.
This is the latest murder of police officers in Yangon to be reported since July, when a police investigator was beaten to death outside a teashop in Insein Township.
CORRECTION: Due to an editing mistake, our initial post said one of the policemen had been shot. That was incorrect. Only a knife was used in the attack. We apologize for the error.
