Two foreign nationals arrested at Yangon airport, accused of defrauding local businessman

A local businessman has accused two foreign nationals – from Holland and Kenya, respectively – of defrauding him out of $60,000 and attempting to flee the country with the cash.

The pair was arrested at Yangon airport on Monday, the Voice reported, after the complainant, U Zaw Min, told police about the alleged incident.

According to the Voice, the money was supposed to be an investment for a hotel project.

“The suspects were planning to work in partnership with U Zaw Min,” a police official told the paper, describing the strange course of events that supposedly followed.

“They came to U Zaw Min’s house and took $60,000 from him and they told him they were going to the embassy. And he felt suspicious and he checked at the Novotel Hotel where they were staying and he discovered that they didn’t stay at the hotel. Then he informed the police. And those two foreigners were found out at Yangon International Airport’s departure lounge.”

U Zaw Min filed the complaint with Kamaryut township police and they are investigating.

The embassy of the Netherlands did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment. Kenya doesn’t have an embassy in Yangon, but a spokesman in Bangkok told our bureau there that they had not heard anything.

“Normally, the person arrested or the police in Yangon would contact us if there is an arrest.”
