Two children in Yangon have tested positive for influenza, authorities confirmed today.
According to Kumudra, the two children are currently receiving treatment at the Yankin Children’s Hospital. One child, aged 3, has been diagnosed with the H1N1 virus — also known as swine flu — and the other, aged 5, with H3N2.
The Yangon Regional director of the Department of Medical Services, Dr Thar Tun Kyaw, told Kumudra that so far, these have been the only children admitted to their hospital that were showing symptoms of influenza. He also confirmed that other children’s hospitals across the city have been prepped to handle any future cases.
The two children had originally been brought to the hospital to be treated for pneumonia. However, when doctors ran tests, both patients tested positive for different strains of influenza.
Earlier this week, two people who passed away at the Yangon General Hospital tested positive for swine flu. Dr. Than Hla, head of the Thingangyun San Pya Hospital, confirmed to Myanmar Now today that two more patients, including a 5-year-old girl, who were admitted to their hospital have also succumbed to the virus.
